Do you believe in Magic?

magic.

“Watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.” – Roald Dahl

The first Friday of every month here in Cotai, you can go to this event called Creative Mornings. It’s a monthly gathering of the creative folk to network, drink coffee, get inspired and listen in on what other creative people are doing. It’s free and I think it’s awesome. I’m always shocked that I don’t know more people there. I consider myself pretty plugged into the community and my circles of friends range wide from architects to strength trainers. Someone has to be going to these things with me right?! But yet, they don’t… so it’s almost like my little-secret-inspirational-evening-event. And that’s ok with me. But the real reason for this blog post, is because today’s theme was about MAGIC.

I LOVE MAGIC. I read fantasy novels, I dress up like kinda Harry Potter 'female version' and unicorns are my favorite. Magic is awesome. So this evening, I put on my best rainbow Pegasus pants, walk around the hallway in the events. What I heard though was something a little different. The speaker was Kevin Gillese, the artistic director of Dad’s Garage. He talked about the magic of the end result. The wonder in which we gaze at things we have only seen at their finest moments. This happens when we don’t see the hard work, dedication and time that goes into the process leading up to that moment. The design, detailing and (ugh) permit process of building a brand new space. The practice, learning and failures that go into an improv actor making up a new song on the fly in a show. The struggle, hours in the gym, resistance of cake and the heavy lifting that go into a good looking body. We want the magic because it looks good. It seems easy. And we don’t have to think about how it got that way.

But easy doesn’t work. Kevin quoted Michelangelo today, who said long ago, “If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn’t seem so wonderful at all.”It turns out folks, that MAGIC is for the fans. Not for the creators.

So, welcome to my blogspot page. I’ll leave you with the final lines from Kevin Gillese’s talk because they’re perfect.

“Don’t believe in magic. It’s not real. Take risks. Be brave. Make magic. It is absolutely real.”
